Overview

The city Jaén is situated in south-central Spain and is the capital of the Jaen province. It is situated in the Andalusia autonomous community and the people here are called Jiennenses. It has a population of about 120,000. The name Jaén appears to have been originated from Jayyan which is an Arabic word that means ‘crossroads of caravans’.

It is the world’s biggest producer of olive oil and the locals call it liquid gold. The topography of this place is decided by the Santa Catalina Mountains; the streets here are narrow and steep.

History
The historians have named it the “Holy Kingdom” because it was ruled once upon a time by Moors and then Christians.

It has been found that the civilization of this city dates back to the Copper Age and this can be proved by using rock paintings and archaeological sites. The Iberians, Carthaginians and Romans ruled this city at various points of time.

Climate

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

Maximum – 28 °C in the month of July
Minimum – 8 °C in January

Art and Culture

1.The Castle Santa Catalina – is friendly to the tourist and there are multimedia guidelines at different locations. You will get a fantastic view from the top of the castle.
2.The Cathedral – is built as per Renaissance architecture. The legend regarding the “Holy Face” is in conflict with the monuments in Paris, Rome, Cuenca and Alicante.
3.The church of San Ildefonso – was built in 2 centuries – 1300 and 1400 and is the largest for Catholic mass. It has various styles of architecture – Gothic, Renaissance and neoclassical.
4.Magdalena Church – is the oldest and has the remains of an old mosque.
5.Santo Domingo Convent – was built in the 15th century.

Cuisine
The cuisine here is mainly dependent on olive oil. The following are the popular local dishes:
Espinacas jinenses – is Spinach cooked in Jaén style.
Ajilimojili – is potatoes cooked in olive oil with red peppers and vinegar.
Alboroinía – is a vegetable stew using onion, yellow squash and eggplant.
Vegetable pottages.
As regards to fish, cod and herring are popular.

Sports and Entertainment

The Arab baths in this city were built in the 11th century and are the largest baths that are open for public use.

Business

This city’s economy is dependent on various industries such as tanneries, chemicals, textiles, distilleries and cookie factories.
