Overview
The town Icod de los Vinos is in the Santa Cruz province on the Tenerife Island in Spain. It is situated in the northwest of Tenerife. People living in this town are called "Icodenses" in Spanish. This town is at an elevation of 235 M above sea level and its population is about 24500.
This town is surrounded by a valley that is fertile and one can see Teide, the volcanic mountain and the dense pine forests from the streets.
History This town was founded in the year 1501; it consists of ancient palaces, feudal houses, convents and churches. The origin for the name of this town is menceyato of Icoden and the well known local Spanish wine – vino. The conquerors of this town recognized that this region is fertile as well as well irrigated and they started cultivating grape wines and sugarcane. The grape wines are very popular.
Art and Culture In the Lorenzo Cáceres Plaza, a monument of Venezuela’s founder of independence - General José Antonio Páez has been erected; his great grandfather originally came from Icod.
Dragon Tree – is famous in Icod and it has been in existence for thousands of years. However, this has not been validated by any scientific study. Tourists should never miss this tree in this town. It is located near the San Marcos church.
San Marcos Church – is situated at the Lorenzo Cáceres Plaza.
La Pila Plaza – is situated near the Drago Park and grand old homes border this plaza. One such home is the Cáceres family house. At present this is a museum. The plaza has a small botanical garden and is one of the most beautiful places in this town.
Cave of the Wind – is recognized as the world’s largest volcanic cave and is 14 KM long. It has a lava tube with a number of entrances.
Cuisine
The gastronomy in this place is somewhat unique because certain dishes require local ingredients and hence have to be prepared locally.
The below mentioned sauces are used with fishes – bagas, salemas, samas, vieja and chernes.
1.Mojo Verde – is a sauce prepared from cilantro. 2.Mojo picón – is a spicy sauce.
Wrinkled potatoes – Potatoes are cooked in salt water and served using their skins. The black variety is the best of the lot.
Some of the popular dessert items are – honeyed rice, roasted milk, plantains stuffed and fried, sweet potato pastries, etc.
Business The economy of this town is mainly dependent on banana plantations, vineyards and orchards.
