Overview
The village Es Mercadal is situated in the Minorca center in the Balearic Islands in Spain and it is a municipality. It is located midway between Ciutadella and Mahon.
Toro Mountain is the highest in the island and this town lies at the foot of the mountain. Tourism plays a minimal part in this town; however it is worthwhile to visit Minorca’s patron saint. You will get genuine Minorcan food in the restaurants in this village; this place is also popular for almond biscuits and manufacture of Sandals. The streets in this village are quiet and the houses whitewashed.
History
The origin for the name “Es Mercadal” is the Latin language word mercatum meaning market. Majorcan King James II, in 1301, established a public commerce center in Minorca and this market is still the attraction on the island.

The maximum and minimum average temperatures in this city are 26°C in August and 10 °C in January-February.

Some of the monuments in this place are as follows:
1.Mount Toro – is the highest point (352 M) in this village and this dominates the village. As per the legend, the Virgin statue was found on the rock cleft by a bull (el toro) and this could be the reason for the name – Mount Toro. Another opinion is that this has originated from the Arabic word – al-tor which means highest mountain. A convent is located at the top of Mount Toro. The statue of Virgin makes this place important for pilgrimage.
Municipal Art museum – containing the Roman History is located in the Santa Teresa Estate.
Eco-museum – has exhibits of countryside historic remains, fauna, botany, etc.
Cuisine
Popular sweets are crespellines (almond biscuits) and amargos.

Golf Son Parc – is a popular 18 hole Golf course where one can play and enjoy golfing. Fornells marine resort – is a natural port where you can enjoy sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, water skiing, scuba diving, water biking and windsurfing. Son Parc – is a beach that is not only beautiful, but also less crowded and is ideal for families as well as children. Cala Pregonda – is a beautiful bay that is considered as the jewel of Menorca. The water here is crystal blue and the sand crisp light. Behind it you have woods of tamarisk and pine. San Jaime Club – is attractive mainly for children because of the water/ play parks. St. Martin fiesta – held every year in July where horses dance to the music.
